Design and launch an intuitive, cross-platform mobile application to extend the essential features of the existing FutureRx web platform, enabling on-the-go digital prescription management and personalized healthcare.
Target Audience: Healthcare plan members, including individuals and families, who need to manage prescriptions, track health alerts, and understand their benefits.
My Role
I was responsible for the end-to-end user experience and visual design of the FutureRX Mobile App.
Key UX Contributions: Defined the core three-tab Information Architecture (Alerts, Home, Profile) and designed user flows (e.g., 'Lowest Drug Price') after conducting Research and Brainstorming.
Key UI Contributions: Developed the Visual Design System (Branding Integration) and UI Library, and created the final Module Designs, ensuring high-contrast Accessibility for critical clinical data.
Process Oversight: I managed Prototyping, facilitated user Testing and Insights, and drove Iterative Changes based on feedback before hand-off to development.
Challenge: Bridging the Accessibility Gap
The existing FutureRx web platform provided robust digital prescription management, but stakeholders and users demanded on-the-go access. The core problem was a lack of convenience and immediacy, resulting in:
Medication Adherence Risk: Users struggled to keep up with medication schedules without immediate, push-notification reminders.
Fragmented Healthcare: Difficulty accessing and managing health records and appointments outside of a desktop environment.
Competitive Lag: The market was saturated with mobile-first health apps, and FutureRx needed to maintain relevance and meet user expectations for a seamless mobile experience.
The Solution: FutureRx Mobile App MVP
Designed a user-centric, high-fidelity MVP (Minimum Viable Product) focusing on the most critical mobile needs:
Core Feature 1: Smart Medication Reminders: Personalized, visual reminders that adapt to the user's schedule, addressing a key pain point identified in user research.
Core Feature 2: Intuitive Prescription Management: A simplified flow for viewing, refilling, and managing digital prescriptions from the mobile device.
Core Feature 3: Unified Health Hub: Seamless access to health records and appointment scheduling, consolidating fragmented healthcare data into one place.
Design process
A structured 5-phase approach—Product Definition, Research, Analysis, Design, and Validation—was followed to deliver the Future RX mobile app. This methodology emphasized continuous stakeholder collaboration, iterative prototyping, and data-driven validation to ensure the final product was highly usable, aligned with business goals, and met user needs.
Defining the Experience (UX)
The project began with deep Research and Brainstorming to define the minimum viable features for a mobile user. This work established the core Information Architecture, settling on a lean, intuitive three-tab structure (Alerts, Home, Profile) optimized for quick glances and immediate task completion.Brainstorming focused on evolving core features—like prescription management and health tracking—into innovative, engaging concepts. The team prioritized Smart Medication Reminders, Visual Medication Tracking, and AI-Powered Health Recommendations to create a highly personalized solution.
Crucial user flows, such as the 'Lowest Drug Price' search and prescription refills, were mapped and simplified, ensuring complex web interactions translated into fluid mobile sequences.
Building the system (UI & Collaboration)
Before high-fidelity design began, I engaged in essential Collaboration with the PM and Lead Developer during the Analysis phase. This step was vital for technical feasibility, ensuring our UI Library and visual solutions could be efficiently implemented. For the visual design, I focused on scalability and accessibility:I developed the complete Visual Design System (Branding Integration) and the reusable UI Library to ensure consistency across the application.
I ensured all final Module Designs met high-contrast Accessibility standards, a non-negotiable requirement for critical clinical data.
The design wasn't finalized until it was validated. I led Testing and Insights sessions with existing plan members, which provided critical feedback and drove Iterative Changes to refine the navigation and core interactions. To ensure speed-to-market, I managed the process to support Simultaneous Development, working closely with engineering to hand off finalized UI components as they were validated. This concurrent approach significantly accelerated the launch of the MVP.
Results
The FutureRx Mobile App MVP was deemed successful based on its ability to enhance key performance indicators focused on health outcomes and user satisfaction: The implementation of Smart Medication Reminders directly targeted and aimed to increase the Medication Adherence Rate for users. Intuitive Prescription Management was designed to boost the Refill Completion Rate and reduce friction, while the Unified Health Hub led to higher Monthly Active Users (MAU) and better Feature Usage Rate by consolidating fragmented data. Ultimately, the superior, validated user experience aimed for elevated User Satisfaction scores and a stronger User Retention Rate, positioning the product favorably in the competitive digital healthcare market.
